About the Inn

Check Availability and Make ReservationsThe Penny House Inn dates back to the late 1700's. The original owner of the house was Captain Isaiah H. Horton,  a descendant of Constance Hopkins, who traveled to the "new world" aboard The Mayflower with her father Stephen Hopkins. Stephen Hopkins was one of  41 passengers to sign the Mayflower Compact in 1620 in Provincetown Harbor. The historic home, which was built in Wellfleet in 1751 and moved a century later to it's present location in Eastham, has been an Inn and Tavern since the 1800's.

In the past, women travelers were forbidden to stay overnight in a tavern, so the men would stay at the tavern and the women would sleep at the tavern's owner's house across the street. The property opposite the inn is now St. Aubins Nursery.

The Inn has been lovingly restored to retain the original design of the house and its historic architectural features, and the new owners feel part of the family and take pride carrying on a historic tradition of lodging for the many travelers year after year who make the pristine Lower Cape their destination!
